Celebrating Innovative Young African Entreprenuers
Jessan Kumar Persand
Inspired by both his Marine Science studies at the University of Mauritius
and his uncle’s oyster farm, Jessian decided to start his own company
in 2015. Jessan’s Seafood takes advantage of the lack of fresh crabs in
Mauritius, designing an innovative and sustainable farming operation to
ensure a supply for local hotels and restaurants.
To start off, the company sourced around 5,000 baby crabs locally and from
Madagascar and found a sea farm for cultivation. Jessan has also trained a
team of 7 to maintain the operation as he continues his studies.
Jessan is intent on growing his business and has identified potential
investments in operational improvements to both grow capacity and
reduce cost. His long term vision includes expanding to target more local
customers. Jessan is confident that his farm will be highly influential in
Mauritius’s “blue” economy. Revenue is already near $5,000 per month, and
the entrepreneur plans to expand operations with a nursery, laboratory,
depuration plant and hatchery after year 2.
