Celebrating Innovative Young African Entreprenuers
Gerald Matolo
Gerald has always dreamt big. At age 10, he named himself Gerald after
English footballer Steven Gerrard to aid his goal of surpassing all others in
the sport. Now, he dreams of major entrepreneurial success. As a third-year
Engineering student at Kenyatta University, he founded Angaza (Swahili for
“shine”) Africa Technologies as a for-profit venture that converts green and
municipal waste into briquettes to serve as fuel.
Angaza’s product was designed to solve a problem Gerald had noticed as a
child. Like many old women and children, he was be required to travel long
distances in search of firewood after school. This motivated him to find uses
for the sawdust and other waste around him.
Gerald continues to innovate, finding means to improve his process and
machinery. He plans to increase their capacity for production as well as to
find ways to sell copies of the production equipment he designed. Gerald is
confident that he can design further products to benefit African’s lives and
bolster Angaza’s success.
