Celebrating Innovative Young African Entreprenuers
Edgar Edmund
In 2015, flooding swept away over 50 houses on Edgar’s street. Several
months later, an earthquake destroyed houses in neighbouring villages.
Edgar realized that low-quality materials made these low-income
individuals vulnerable to natural disasters; however, cement houses were
prohibitively expensive. In response, Edgar crafted a solution using readily
available resources.
Working on school holidays, Edgar created a method to turn recycled
plastic materials found on the streets into durable construction blocks. He
also created an oil dioxin filter to prevent the exhaust of harmful fumes. His
business employs 100 people to help collect materials, and he supports
local construction activity with low-cost materials.
Edgar’s invention has attracted significant attention: he has won both
the Mandela Science Fair and the Tanzania Youth Science Fair, and was
nominated for the World Action for Nature award. Upon finishing his
studies, three companies have already offered investment to help Edgar
take his business full-time.
