Celebrating Innovative Young African Entreprenuers
Fadwa Moussaif
Boucharouette Eco-Creation (B.E.C.) was inspired by some confusing market
research which showed that 50% of women knew the art of rug making – yet
none were able to convert this into income. Across Morocco, 30,000 rural
women are skilled in crafts, but only 15% use it to generate wealth. Fadwa
saw an opportunity to change this.
However, the crafts market had a serious problem. Tourists and other
customers were unimpressed by the material quality and designs of most
boucharouette rugs. Fadwa was undeterred. Her search for new materials
led to another startling discovery: the textile cutting industry rejects over
205,000 tons of fabric annually and recycles only 8% of this waste! These
scraps would serve as B.E.C.’s low-cost, high-quality raw materials.
This business model allows B.E.C. to create hand-woven and hand-knotted
carpets as well as chiffon, cushions, boards and bags. The designers are
highly skilled, resulting in top quality products.
The vision is twofold: revive the art of boucharouette rug making and use
this art-form to empower local woman, who are mostly dependent on
their husbands. Fadwa’s goal is to have a chain of boutiques nationwide,
employing over 50 local women and selling over 300m2 per month.
