Celebrating Innovative Young African Entreprenuers
Moonga Chowe
Moonga was visiting his grandparents in their home village when he was
inspired to create his first major venture. Struck by the consistently high rates
of poverty, Moonga saw a lack of information rather than a lack of resources
as the biggest problem. So he created an application that provided farming
education to small-scale farmers in remote areas via text messages.
Moonga is also working to use education to expand financial inclusion in
his home country, via Chilimba – a mobile platform that enables traditional
savings groups to manage their savings and contributions in an efficient
and transparent manner. Issues of fraud have threatened these groups, and
local savings rates have reduced as a result. Chilimba improves the security
of these products and facilitates access to additional financial products for
community members.
Moonga has faced difficulties in taking the fintech revolution to rural
communities – reaching people without phones and changing longstanding,
traditional banking practices is challenging. Nevertheless, the
impact on current customers inspires his confidence that this project will
help those well beyond Zambia.
